The American Bobtail cat will grow to be a medium sized cat, and has a naturally occurring Bobtail. The American Bobtail cat has a very strong appearance and is a hearty well shaped, healthy cap. American Bobtail cats possess a wedge shaped head, and a very distinctive wedge shaped head. The ideal American Bobtail kitten or American Bobtail cat, should have a tail that is clearly visible above the back when the American Bobtail cat or kitten is in an alert position, and the tail should not exceed the hock in length.The American Bobtail cat or kitten tail should be nearly straight with just the slightest of curves.

The American Bobtail has a unique semi dense coat that varies from short hair to medium length hair. The American Bobtail coat is resistant to water. This is one of the many traits that this cat has retained from its, wild counter parts. In addition to the water resistance the American Bobtail cat when in motion, should have a natural rolling appearance in markings, this gives the American Bobtail the strong physical resemblance to that of a bobtailed wildcat.
The American Bobtail cat reaches maturity at 2 to 3 years of age, at which point it can be breed with an other American Bobtail to produce full breed American Bobtail kittens. The American Bobtail is one of the slower maturing felines and has a much longer “kitten” period, which makes it that much more of a desired pet for many kitten lovers.
